How did Harper get everyone all worked up that the coalition was a coup d'etat? By convincing Canadians that their political system was American. And it was easy, just repeat it enough--"the coalition is not democratic!"--and soon it becomes the truth. "Yeah," say the citizens, "we just had an election and we voted in Harper." I confess I didn't know until the past few weeks how few Canadians understand their own political system. In the shadow of the American colossus (however tottering it is) and its recent riveting election, Canadians can't get clear of America's influence, particularly when it comes to differentiating a parliamentary democracy from a republic. I know Canadians don't know their history very well but I had assumed, from my 18 years of living up here, that they couldn't be fooled into thinking Ottawa is just a smaller Washington.

I would think that it would be the opposite... that you in Canada would differentiate, celebrate and know well your quite different political system, as you do in other areas of life, culture, sports, etc!! It seems odd that you don't!

I am not sure it matters if we are more stupid than the American voter, I just despair how collectively stupid we all are. It can me amusing in a mad way. Mostly it is bemusing in a maddening way.

Keep writing Ken, maybe it has been up to you all along to change things!

That makes sense Brent, given as how much we up here support our Canadian identity from our "not American-ness." Perhaps the intricacies of comparative political systems just aren't as compelling as being able to say "we all have health care and you don't--nah, nah, nah-nah nah...." In other words, something will only act as a differentiator for Canadians if we clearly understand it to indicate our comparative superiority.
Is a constitutional monarchy really better than a republic? It's not much of an opportunity for national chest-thumping.

Less national chest-thumping than in the States is a good thing. You guys can be proud of your humility.
